To be who you are is one of life’s biggest lessons. It can be scary being yourself and an ongoing battle in a world where people want to define who you should be.
Lesson from Three Decades Ago
A former group of friends taught me the importance of always being myself. They invited me to go with them to the Science of Mind church.
Several months later, I felt moved to do a reading at one service from the meditation book, The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie. It was scary reading the meditation “Be Who You Are” in front of the congregation. However, I felt so empowered afterward. Some of these friends thought I was weird to do a reading at church and criticized me.
Then I noticed how these so-called friends constantly put each other down in the name of fun. These people wanted me to become who they thought I should be. Therefore, I left the group as I was tired of being made fun of because I was being myself. I was lonely for months, yet my inner wisdom told me I was better off alone than with this group of people.
Don’t Follow the Herd
Do you really want to be like everyone else? Wear the same clothes? Have an identical hairstyle? And be a clone in everything else in life?
A man from a former spiritual group always said, “Moo, don’t follow the herd.” This always stayed with me and encouraged me to be myself, despite other people’s opinions. And believe me, they have them!
A friend gave me a photo to use when I was creating my Answers From Animals deck. Ah, the herd of buffalo was perfect to use for the following card.

Be Who You Are By
One way to be who you are is to listen to the small voice within, your intuition, your gut, or whatever you choose to call it. Then follow it. For example:
- Bring an umbrella on a sunny day.
- Ignore advice to date a guy who gives you the creeps.
- Drive a different way home.
- Say no to a career offer that doesn’t feel right.
- Move to a new city, state, or country.
There will be naysayers who say you’re making a mistake in your actions. Nonetheless, being you is learning to trust yourself.
Results of Listening to Your Intuition
It’s always interesting to see the outcome of following your gut. For instance:
- People made fun of you for carrying an umbrella on a sunny day. Until they learned you scared off a potential mugger with it.
- Police arrested the guy who gave you the creeps for stalking a woman.
- You missed being stuck in traffic for three hours by ignoring directions from a loved one.
- Others thought you were crazy for turning down the job, but you got an offer for your dream job a few days later.
- Your friend told you how you’ll move back home in a year. Instead, you love the area you moved to and found your soulmate.
Final Thoughts
Critics will judge you because you are not following the herd and ignoring what others think you should do. You do you! Be who you are always! It’s your life and you are in charge of steering the direction you want to take. Enjoy the journey…
