My Dad’s Dream

The following blog post, My Dad’s Dream is from Julie Saillant, who had me as a guest on her podcast. During the interview the subject of dreams of the deceased popped up and Julie mentioned her father’s experience with dreaming regarding his wife. What a fascinating story! And I’m very grateful that she shared it with us as some of you may relate to it. Here’s Julie’s narrative:

My Dad’s Dream

Being an intuitive, empathic healer with gifts from birth, I have always had dreams where I could walk between the realms and see things others couldn’t. When my mother unexpectedly passed away, I was lucky enough to see her in my dreams and also received channeled information directly from God which included pictures of her in heaven.

When my mother left the earth, my father was devastated. My dad was an exceptionally strong man both physically, mentally and in his faith, and he always wanted to have a vision of my mother so that he could see for himself that she was okay. Yet it never came.

There was not one time he had ever had a dream of her in the 17 years since she’d been gone.

Vacation

Just two years ago, my dad had decided to take a family vacation to go visit my sister who had moved near the beach.

The day we were supposed to go home, we were going through airport security when my dad turned grey. I asked him what was wrong and he pointed to his heart. He got on the plane, but when I asked to sit next to him, I was told that “People pay good money for the seats in the front of the plane.”

To which I responded saying “My father may be having a heart attack on this plane. If that happens, I can guarantee you that you will need my help. I need to sit with him – make it happen!” Yes, I lost my temper and I was scared to death that my dad would have a heart attack at 50,000 feet with no chance of surviving.

I was pulled aside and told that “The crew did not think he should fly and that it would be better if we got off the plane.”

Hospital

We deplaned and he was angry with me saying, “He just wanted to go home”. The EMT’s came and took him to the hospital. When he was being admitted, he looked at me and said “We’ll be fine as long as I don’t have any dreams of your mother!”

We looked at each other and we both knew what that meant. If my father had a dream about my mother, it was game over for him. I nervously laughed and he was admitted.

They did determine that he had a mild heart attack and that his arteries were 90% clogged. They decided to operate and perform heart surgery on him, which is “fairly typical’ and most patients are “just fine.”

Huge warning bells went off in my head!

What they didn’t understand was that my father had a multitude of physical ailments. He had diabetes, spinal stenosis, and a muscle disease in his legs which was very painful as well as a history of blood clots. Most importantly, his heart was on the opposite side of his chest. This is called dextrocardia.

He was in the hospital for 3 days and on the 4th day, my sister and I went in to see him before the surgery. We were expecting to find him worried, nervous, unsure if this was the right thing to do and we what we saw was something completely different.

My Dad's Dream of His Departed Wife

My Dad’s Dream about His Wife

He was beaming with happiness! He was radiating with a confidence and almost glow around him that I had not seen in a very long time. Because his physical ailments caused him quite a bit of discomfort and he was always in pain with his back or legs. Instead that morning he had a huge smile on his face.

He said “Girls! Girls! You’re not going to believe what happened!”

We said “What?”

He said “I had a dream about your mother last night.”

And. My. Heart. Sank.

Tears burned in my eyes, which I held back and put on a happy face. I KNEW what the dream meant and I also knew why he had it that particular night.

My sister had no idea and she was just as excited as he was.

He went on in great detail describing how he had seen her and what she looked like. He said she was a radiant beauty and that she came to him with love in her eyes and peace in her heart.

That morning God told me to take a picture of him, and I knew this was the last picture I would take of him alive.

Surgery

We hugged him and told him how much we loved him and he went into surgery. I held it together until I got to the elevator, then I lost it and was crying hysterically. I told my sister that the dream meant that our father would not come out of the surgery and that he would surely die.

This dream came at a significant time in his life, just before the surgery, and he had never had even one dream of her, so why now? The answer was to give him comfort and hope, that no matter what happened in surgery – she would be there waiting for him. My sister tried to comfort me, but I was inconsolable.

We went to the beach to try and pretend all would be well. Then we got the call that he was out of surgery and back in his room. We high fived each other and breathed a sigh of relief that he had made it.

After Surgery

Twenty minutes later, we got another call saying that he had been taken back to ICU to be “monitored”.

We rushed to the hospital to see him and what we saw shocked us. He was grey, in pain and in the worst shape I had ever seen him.

I told him “Dad, we are here. Save your strength” as he gasped for breath.

He said “I have never been this sick”.

The doctor told us he had a “slight complication” and that everything should be all right and he “should be going home tomorrow”.

Um, are you looking at what I’m looking at? What I’m seeing is a man who is totally grey, very sick, and he isn’t going anywhere for a while.

We were both on either side of his bed when the blood clot lets loose and he jerked. I looked at my sister and we both ran out of the room.

Everything that you see on TV is exactly what happens in real life – except it’s a million times worse. You hear “Code blue” and they all rush in and close the sheets so you can’t see anything. The longer they gave him CPR and he didn’t respond – the worse I knew it was.

My Dad’s Departure

After 15 minutes, I saw the vision. My father was in a white space with no walls, ceiling or floor. He was looking around, when he saw a ball of light come towards him and my mother stepped through.

The look of pure joy on his face was indescribable. He said “You’re here! You’re really here!” and she said “I waited for you.”

I knew then and there that he was with God in heaven and that the body in that hospital bed was just a body – he was gone. I was given a great gift to have seen that moment in time, and it has given me a lot of peace about his passing.

Final Thoughts

Dreams are important. They give us keys and information about events that are either currently happening or could occur in the future. They may seem silly or weird, but they are always gifts that can help us, if we have the courage to try to understand what they mean, instead of pushing them away.
